Does flow rate have an impact on UV sterilisation?

By Admin on Fri 10 February 2017 in Water Filtration FAQ's

Flow rate is an important factor in the effectiveness of UV sterilisation. There needs to be adequate contact time between the water and the UV rays to ensure that viruses and bacteria are effectively disabled.

If the flow rate is too high, the appropriate amount of contact will not be made and therefore UV sterilisation will be ineffective. On the other hand, a low flow rate can be equally as problematic. If the water flow passing through the UV is too low, this can lead to heat building up in the chamber causing irreversible damage to the bulbs. An ideal flow rate is dependent on the size of your unit and the make and model of the unit. This can range between 20-65psi if your flow exceeds 75 PSI then it would be advisable to apply a pressure reducing valve.
